In a deeply tragic incident that occurred this morning in Alakia, Ibadan, a police officer pursuing a vehicle opened fire, fatally shooting a student on his way to sit for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exams. Eyewitnesses report that the shooting was unprovoked, resulting in the heartbreaking loss of a promising young life.

Hon. Chief (Dr.) Ezekiel Temitope Oladimeji, popularly known as OTOPE and a leading aspirant for the Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency seat, has expressed profound sorrow over the incident. He strongly condemned the reckless actions of the officer involved and is calling for an immediate and thorough investigation.

“This is an unspeakable tragedy. The young student had his whole future ahead of him,” Dr. OTOPE said. “I urge the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State to immediately suspend the officer responsible and ensure a full, transparent investigation is conducted.”

Dr. OTOPE extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, promising to reach out and offer support during this painful time. He emphasized the urgent need for better training and discipline among law enforcement personnel to prevent such avoidable tragedies.6

“This incident is a sobering reminder of the importance of professionalism and restraint within our security agencies,” Dr. OTOPE continued. “I call on all stakeholders—government officials, law enforcement authorities, and community leaders—to rise and demand justice for this innocent child. We must ensure this never happens again.”

Dr. OTOPE’s swift response reflects his deep compassion and solidarity with the grieving family. “My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this unimaginably difficult time. May they find strength and comfort, and may the soul of the young student rest in perfect peace.”
