The Chairman of the Oyo State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Akin Fagbemi, has emphasized the need for innovation, strengthened legal frameworks, and enhanced professional collaboration to advance pharmacy practice in Nigeria.

Dr. Fagbemi made this known at the 3rd edition of the Pharmacist Parley, held at the Ibadan Business School.


Speaking on the theme “Pharmacy Practice in the Era of Healthcare Transformation: Challenges and Opportunities,” Dr. Fagbemi noted that pharmacists remain central to the ongoing transformation within the healthcare sector.
He described the profession as a frontline pillar in ensuring patient safety, rational drug use, and improved health outcomes.
According to him, despite challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and limited resources, the Oyo State Hospitals Management Board is committed to providing an enabling environment for pharmacists to excel.

The Chairman urged practitioners to embrace innovation, continuous education, and interprofessional collaboration as key tools for progress.
Dr. Fagbemi highlighted antimicrobial stewardship as a critical area requiring urgent attention due to the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance.
He stressed that pharmacists play a major role in promoting responsible antibiotic use to preserve the effectiveness of life-saving medicines.
Dr. Fagbemi also underscored the growing relevance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare, explaining that AI-powered tools can enhance decision-making, detect medication errors, and support personalized treatment plans.
In addition, the chairman called for a more robust legal and regulatory framework to strengthen drug procurement and distribution processes in Nigeria.
He announced that the board recently introduced a Drug Procurement Manager role, which has improved medicine availability and procurement efficiency across state health facilities since its introduction in September 2025.
Dr. Fagbemi expressed appreciation to the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, for his consistent support to the healthcare sector, noting that the governor’s leadership has been pivotal to ongoing reforms.
He urged pharmacists to remain committed to professionalism and patient-centered care, affirming that their contributions are essential to the future of healthcare delivery in Oyo State and Nigeria at large.
The highlight of the event; The Chairman Oyo State Hospital Management Board presented awards of Excellence to deserving Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technician that were selected after careful scrutiny.
