The Oyo State House of Assembly has dismissed as baseless and mischievous the allegations by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that loyalists of Governor Seyi Makinde are plotting to victimize Hon. Ibrahim Shittu, a member of the APC representing Saki West State Constituency.

In a statement signed by Hon. Waheed Akintayo, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Media, Public Affairs and ICT, the Assembly described the opposition’s claims as “false, ill-conceived, and a deliberate attempt to blackmail and arm-twist the legislature through preemptive tactics.”

The House said it found it “laughable and regrettable” that the APC would allege of plans to mobilize thugs against one of its lawmakers ahead of plenary resumption, stressing that such tendencies were alien to the current Assembly.

“As a responsible legislative institution with a consistent track record of peaceful and orderly conduct since 2023, we find it laughable and regrettable that the Oyo APC would descend to such depths of desperation,” Akintayo said.

He added that while the Assembly has consistently chosen the path of peace in line with its constitutional mandate, this does not diminish its authority to take disciplinary measures against any member found to have breached House rules and regulations.

The statement also addressed allegations by the APC regarding the recently approved N300 billion loan facility.

The Assembly explained that the approval process was transparent and in full compliance with legislative procedures which include normal and emergency plenary sittings as the case may be.

“The emergency sitting at which the loan was approved was convened because the facility was deemed not only essential but also urgent and expedient for loan refinancing, infrastructural and socio-economic development of the state,” Akintayo clarified.

The Assembly stressed that there was no plot either real or imagined, to victimize Hon. Ibrahim Shittu or any other member of the House.

“The Oyo State House of Assembly remains a bastion of democracy, where all members, regardless of party affiliation, are treated with respect, fairness, and afforded the freedom to express their views,” the statement added.

The Assembly accused the APC of attempting to politicize issues and sow unnecessary tension, urging the party to embrace constructive criticism instead of fear-mongering.

“These allegations are not only false but have been amplified in bad faith for political gains. They represent a disservice to the legislative arm of government and an insult to the intelligence of the good people of Oyo State,” the House declared.

Reaffirming its focus on legislative responsibilities, the Assembly assured that it would not be distracted by false narratives.

It urged all well-meaning stakeholders to disregard the APC’s claims and support ongoing efforts to build a peaceful and prosperous Oyo State.
