In a surprise move, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has taken decisive action by sacking the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Ohna Sergeant Chidi Awuse. The paramount ruler, who hails from Emohua Kingdom, was removed from his position due to his refusal to include the governor’s pictures, along with that of his deputy, in the council’s 2024 calendar.

The governor, in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, accused Eze Ohna Sergeant Chidi Awuse of disloyalty and alleged that he owed his allegiance to the governor’s political foe and predecessor, the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike. According to Governor Fubara, the council suffered from a period of inactivity and ineffective leadership under Eze Awuse.

To fill the void left by Eze Ohna Sergeant Chidi Awuse, Governor Fubara has appointed Eze Chike Worlu Wodo, the Paramount Ruler of Apara Kingdom, as the new Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers. The governor made this announcement during a special meeting with council members at the Banquet Hall of Government House in Port Harcourt.

Eze Awuse’s one-year tenure was marked by his failure to effectively lead the council and promote unity among its members and with the State Government. The governor was particularly critical of Eze Awuse’s decision not to include the photographs of himself and his deputy in the calendar, considering it a deliberate snub to the state government.

Governor Fubara emphasized the need for a change in leadership within the council, pointing out that the exclusion of government officials’ images in the calendar was unacceptable. With Eze Chike Worlu Wodo now at the helm, the governor is hopeful that the council will be revitalized and fulfill its responsibilities effectively.
