French President Emmanuel Macron has commended Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for his bold reforms and transformative vision for Nigeria, likening his current mission to the strides he made as governor of Lagos State.
Speaking during a dinner in Paris on Thursday, Macron described Tinubu as a leader who “conquered military rule” and highlighted Nigeria’s vast potential. “Nigeria is a formidable country with talented young people. Many Nigerians are exceptional in their chosen careers,” Macron said, as quoted in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
In his response, Tinubu expressed gratitude for France’s willingness to collaborate with Nigeria under Macron’s leadership. He emphasized the importance of strengthening relations between the two nations and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to economic reforms.
“Regarding Nigeria’s economy, as you have said, we have embarked on a very strong reform, and there is no looking back,” Tinubu stated. He stressed that embracing change and optimism is crucial for the future of both Nigeria and the African continent.
Tinubu also appreciated Macron’s efforts to promote investment in Africa, referencing the presence of Nigerian business magnates such as Aliko Dangote, Aig Imoukhuede, and Tony Elumelu at the event.
“President Macron, all your efforts about Africa, I promise you shall not be in vain. You open your doors for investment for our friends and brothers here,” Tinubu added.
The dinner underscored the growing ties between Nigeria and France, with both leaders expressing optimism about fostering greater cooperation in trade, investment, and development.
