NOT EVERYTHING SHOULD BE POLITICISED: CREDIT SHOULD BE GIVEN WHERE IT IS DUE By Omoniyi Afeez (OXYGEN)

The arrival of the two surveillance aircraft procured by the Oyo State Government to strengthen the state’s security architecture has generated widespread reactions. While every citizen has the right to question government actions, such criticism should be based on facts, not assumptions or misinformation.

Aircraft procurement is not the same as buying a car or a motorcycle. It is a highly regulated process involving multiple stages of approval, technical evaluation, security clearance, acquisition, inspection, and delivery. These procedures are especially stringent when the aircraft is intended for security operations.

What is even more surprising is that some of those making the loudest criticisms cannot distinguish between a surveillance aircraft and a fighter jet, yet they speak with absolute certainty. It is important to understand that surveillance aircraft are designed primarily for intelligence gathering, aerial monitoring, and supporting security operations,not combat missions.

There is also a clear distinction between civil aviation and military or security aviation. Since these aircraft were procured for security purposes, the involvement of the Nigerian Air Force in the reception and operational process is both expected and appropriate. The regulatory procedures for security aircraft are different from those applicable to commercial or private civil aircraft.

Constructive criticism is an essential part of democracy, but it must be informed and objective. Rather than spreading misconceptions, our collective concern should be how these valuable assets will be properly maintained and sustainably managed so they continue to serve the people of Oyo State for many years.

Governor Seyi Makinde deserves commendation for taking steps to strengthen the security capacity of Oyo State. Security remains one of the foundations of economic growth and public confidence, and every genuine effort towards achieving it should be acknowledged.
