The Good Governance Initiative (GGI) held its Monthly Congress on Thursday, 26th June 2025, with the meeting commencing at 4:00 p.m. The event brought together members of the organisation, representatives of various trade associations, community leaders, local government coordinators, and invited guests for an interactive session aimed at promoting good governance, civic participation, and grassroots engagement.

The meeting opened with an opening prayer, followed by a welcome address delivered by the Chairman of the Good Governance Initiative, Prince Bayo Okeyode. In his remarks, Prince Okeyode highlighted the vision, goals, and objectives of GGI, describing the organisation as a non-governmental and non-political organisation committed to promoting good governance and ensuring that every citizen enjoys the dividends of democracy, irrespective of political affiliation.

He explained that GGI exists to bridge the gap between government and the people by promoting voter education, encouraging active citizenship, combating voter apathy, and creating opportunities that empower individuals and communities. He also appreciated members for their continued commitment to the organisation and encouraged them to remain steadfast in advancing the ideals of good governance.

The high point of the congress was the “Meet the People” session, which featured the Governorship Candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), Hon. Bimbo Adekambi. The interactive session was organised to provide members, grassroots stakeholders, and ordinary voters with the opportunity to engage directly with the aspirant, understand his vision, and hear firsthand the programmes and policies he intends to implement if elected Governor of Oyo State.

During his address, Hon. Bimbo Adekambi outlined his aspirations for Oyo State and assured members that, if elected, his administration would sustain and build upon the developmental achievements of the current administration under Governor Seyi Makinde. He emphasised continuity in governance, promising to consolidate on existing developmental projects while introducing new initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of the people and accelerating the state’s socio-economic development.

The session also featured questions from members on governance, political neutrality, grassroots development, empowerment, and public accountability.

Hon. Adekambi responded to the questions, reiterating that the interests of Oyo State and its people would always take precedence over partisan interests.

It is important to note that the engagement was not an endorsement of any political candidate or political party by the Good Governance Initiative (GGI).

Rather, it formed part of GGI’s civic responsibility to create a neutral platform where political aspirants can interact directly with citizens, particularly grassroots members and voters who may not ordinarily have close access to those seeking public office. The objective was to enable members to make informed decisions through direct engagement and dialogue.

The meeting also featured goodwill messages from representatives of the Fish Sellers Association, Tailors Association, local government coordinators, and other stakeholders, all of whom commended GGI’s efforts in promoting civic awareness, citizen participation, and community development.

The Election Observer informed members of plans to organise election-related training, while reports from the Media and Finance units highlighted opportunities in empowerment, employment, youth development, and organisational growth.

As part of the programme, Hon. Bimbo Adekambi officially launched the GGI Half-Year Report Card. In a demonstration of his support for the organisation’s vision and ongoing civic engagement initiatives, he also donated the sum of ₦250,000 to the Good Governance Initiative (GGI) to support its activities and programmes. The Chairman, Prince Bayo Okeyode, expressed profound appreciation for the generous donation, as well as to the special guest and all participants for making the engagement successful.

The meeting concluded with a closing prayer and a renewed commitment by members to continue promoting the ideals of good governance, responsible leadership, informed political participation, and sustainable community development across Oyo State and Nigeria.
