IBADAN, OYO STATE – In a move that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of South-West Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially confirmed business mogul and former federal lawmaker, Hon. Shina Peller, as its flagbearer for the Oyo North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made today in Ibadan during an emergency high-profile stakeholder meeting. The session was presided over by party executives and attended by key loyalists of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration, including the Governor himself, who reportedly gave the final nod to Peller’s candidacy.

Peller’s emergence follows months of high-stakes political maneuvering since his defection to the PDP in early 2024. Political analysts are already describing the move as a “strategic masterstroke” by Governor Makinde to reclaim the Oyo North seat, which has remained a stubborn stronghold for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
By fielding Peller, a native of Iseyin with massive influence in the Oke-Ogun region, the PDP aims to consolidate the youth vote and leverage Peller’s existing grassroots network from his tenure in the 9th Assembly.

Oyo North is widely considered the state’s most volatile “battleground” zone. It spans 13 local governments, with 10 located in the agrarian Oke-Ogun area and 3 in the commercial nerve center of Ogbomoso.

“Today’s confirmation is not just about a ticket; it’s about a movement for generational shift,” a senior PDP official stated shortly after the meeting. “With Hon. Shina Peller, we are offering Oyo North a representative who blends legislative experience with a deep understanding of the grassroots needs of our people.”

The contest is set to be a litmus test for Governor Makinde’s “Seyi Leekansi” influence. The APC has held the seat for multiple terms, but the 2023 results showed a narrowing gap. With Peller—who polled significantly as a third-party candidate in 2023—now running under the umbrella of the ruling state party, the numerical advantage appears to have shifted.

Peller is expected to run on a platform of “inclusive representation,” targeting the state’s large youth population.
The battle will center on whether Peller can “sweep” the 10 Oke-Ogun LGAs to offset the APC’s traditional dominance in Ogbomoso.
As a successful entrepreneur and nightlife king-turned-politician, Peller brings a formidable campaign chest to the PDP’s arsenal.

As news of the confirmation filters through the hilly terrains of Oke-Ogun and the busy markets of Ogbomoso, the 2027 senatorial race has officially been set on fire. The APC is yet to release a formal statement, but party insiders suggest an emergency strategy meeting is already underway.
