The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday joined dignitaries, traditional rulers, and well-wishers in Oyo to celebrate the 67th birthday of former senator, Monsurat Sunmonu.
The colourful event, held in Oyo town, drew a large crowd of political figures, royal fathers, and admirers who gathered to honour the celebrant. Many attendees praised Sunmonu for her inclusiveness, humility, and longstanding contributions to public service.

Speaking at the occasion, Governor Makinde expressed joy and gratitude to witness the milestone, describing Sunmonu as a “true definition of sincerity.” According to him, the former senator is known for her straightforwardness and integrity, always “saying it the way it is without any addition or subtraction.”

Makinde also revealed the effort he made to attend the celebration, noting that he departed Abuja shortly after 11 a.m., landed at Ibadan International Airport, and proceeded directly to Oyo to honour the celebrant. He emphasized that Sunmonu is “worthy of celebration.”

In a moment that sparked excitement among attendees, the governor jokingly stated that he is no longer contesting to become governor of Oyo State but hinted that those to be supported in future elections would be unveiled before the end of May. His remark drew enthusiastic chants from women at the event, who echoed in Yoruba, “Ibi oba lo lan lo,” meaning “Wherever you go, we will follow you.”

Makinde concluded his speech with prayers for the celebrant, wishing her long life in sound health and continued prosperity.
