As political permutations gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, Akinsete Olakunle is emerging as a distinctive voice in Oyo State politics, blending an unconventional background in entertainment with hands-on government experience to make his case for legislative office.

Olakunle, who currently serves as Special Adviser on Housing and Urban Development, says his journey from the entertainment stage to the corridors of power has uniquely equipped him for the task of representing Ibadan South-West Constituency II in the Oyo State House of Assembly.

Before his foray into governance, Olakunle built a career in the entertainment industry as a comedian and event host an experience he describes as foundational to his leadership philosophy.

“Entertainment taught me how to connect with people, understand their emotions, and communicate effectively,” he said. “Those skills are critical in governance, where listening and responding to the needs of the people must come first.”

Observers note that his transition reflects a growing trend of non-traditional actors entering politics, bringing with them a mix of creativity, grassroots appeal, and communication skills often lacking in conventional political pathways.

Beyond entertainment, Olakunle points to his role in government as evidence of his readiness for legislative duties. As Special Adviser, he has been involved in shaping housing policies, facilitating stakeholder engagements, and supporting initiatives aimed at improving access to affordable housing.

He maintains that this exposure has given him a practical understanding of governance, particularly in policy implementation and inter-agency collaboration skills he believes are essential for effective lawmaking.

“My experience in the executive arm has shown me how policies are designed and executed. It has prepared me to contribute meaningfully at the legislative level,” he said.

Declaring his intention to contest for the Ibadan South-West Constituency II seat, Olakunle emphasized the critical role of lawmakers in bridging the gap between government and the people.

He pledged to focus on people-oriented policies, with priority areas including youth empowerment, support for small businesses, and inclusive community development.

“Representation is about impact. It’s about ensuring that the voices of the people are heard and translated into policies that improve their daily lives,” he stated.

Central to his campaign message is a commitment to what he describes as “quality representation” a model anchored on accountability, accessibility, and measurable results.

Olakunle assured constituents that his approach would go beyond rhetoric, promising consistent engagement and practical interventions tailored to local needs.

He also underscored the importance of sustainable empowerment initiatives, noting that meaningful development must be structured to create long-term benefits rather than temporary relief.

Political analysts suggest that Olakunle’s candidacy reflects broader shifts within Nigeria’s democratic space, where voters particularly young people are increasingly drawn to candidates with relatable backgrounds and proven track records outside traditional politics.

His blend of entertainment, entrepreneurship, and governance experience positions him as part of a new generation of aspirants seeking to redefine public service.

With the 2027 elections still on the horizon, Olakunle’s message appears to be gaining traction among sections of the electorate eager for fresh perspectives in governance.

While the contest is expected to attract multiple contenders, his supporters argue that his diverse experience and grassroots connection give him a competitive edge.
