Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has apologised to citizens over the persistent electricity outages nationwide, acknowledging the strain the situation has placed on homes and businesses.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the minister admitted that the erratic power supply has worsened living conditions, especially amid rising temperatures and growing public frustration.

However, Adelabu assured Nigerians that relief is in sight, revealing that coordinated efforts involving gas suppliers and ongoing infrastructure repairs are already underway. He expressed confidence that electricity supply would begin to improve within the next two weeks.

According to him, the government now has clear timelines for fixing critical gas pipelines and restoring supply to power plants, including key facilities operated by Seplat Energy.

He further disclosed that a special committee has been set up to ensure gas producers comply with domestic supply obligations, a major issue affecting power generation in the country.

Adelabu also emphasised the need to improve payment structures for gas suppliers, noting that this would incentivise increased supply and support stable electricity generation.

Nigeria’s power sector continues to grapple with challenges such as inadequate gas supply, ageing infrastructure, pipeline maintenance issues, and financial constraints. Despite these hurdles, the minister reiterated the federal government’s commitment to reversing the trend.

He expressed optimism that the sector would soon stabilise, adding that the government is working round the clock to restore and surpass previous performance levels.

Adelabu also reaffirmed the administration’s target of achieving 6,000 megawatts of electricity generation before the end of 2026, assuring Nigerians of improved power supply in the months ahead.
