Professor Femi Sunday Akinwumi, of the Department of Educational Management, will on Thursday, 26th February, 2026 deliver 605th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Ibadan.

 

The distinguished scholar of repute, Prof. Akinwumi will on behalf of the Faculty of Education deliver the 605th UI’s Inaugural Lecture titled: “Achieving Quality amidst Quantity: The Paradox of Managing Education in Nigeria” at the prestigious Trenchard Hall of the institution at exactly 3:00pm.

 

 

Prof. Akinwumi becomes the 5th scholar from the Department of Educational Management to deliver Inaugural Lecture. Others who have delivered from the Department of Educational Management were; Professors, R.S Longe, J.B Babalola, Adebola Jayeoba and Segun Adedeji.

 

Prof. Akinwumi’s scholarship has consistently illuminated pathways for institutional growth, policy innovation and sustainable leadership within education system. Prof. Akinwumi has shaped minds, influenced policy directions and strengthen administrative frameworks through research, teaching and community engagement.

 

Prof. Femi Akinwumi was born in Aramoko-Ekiti in Ekiti West Local Government Area, Ekiti State. He attended L.A/Anglican Primary School, Erijiyan Ekiti and proceeded to Modern School, he later attended Erijiyan/Ikogosi High School. Prof. Akinwumi gained admission to the then Oyo State College of Education, Ila-Orangun where he obtained a National Certificate in Education (NCE). In his quest for more knowledge, he attended University of Ibadan where he earned Bachelor of Education Degree (B.Ed), (Second Class Upper Division) in Educational Management/Economics in 1991, M.Ed in Personnel Administration in 1994 and PhD in 2000.

Prof. Akinwumi started his teaching career as an Assistant Lecturer in 1999 in the Department of Educational Management, University of Ibadan. He was promoted Senior Lecturer in 2007, a Reader in 2010 and and full professor in 2013.

 

 

Prof. Akinwumi has over 120 academic publications in both local and international outlets out of which were about 7 books authored singularly or co-authored with others. Prof. Akinwumi is a member of several academic associations. He has consulted for SUBEB, UNESCO, UNICEF, IICBA, NIEPA, NUT among others. As a researcher, he has travelled far and wide all States of the federation, his research and quest for more knowledge has taken him to countries like United States of America, United Kingdom, Canada, Sweden, South Korea, Turkey, Kenya, among others.

 

Prof. Akinwumi has successfully supervised about 28 PhD holders. He has served in various capacities in the Department, Faculty and University.

 

Beyond Prof. Akinwumi’s academic accomplishments, he is widely respected for his mentorship and leadership where many young academics and administrators have benefitted from his guidance, integrity and commitment to excellence within and outside the University of Ibadan.

 

Prof. Akinwumi was appointed Executive Chairman, Ekiti SUBEB in 2020 by Dr Kayode Fayemi and was later reappointed by present Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji for his exceptional performance and achievement in Ekiti SUBEB.
