As Nigeria grapples with the challenges of food insecurity, Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration has taken a bold step towards addressing the issue through a comprehensive agribusiness agenda. With a focus on boosting agricultural productivity, enhancing value chain development, and empowering smallholder farmers, the Oyo State government has set a new standard for food security initiatives in the country. In this report, we examine the key components of Makinde’s agribusiness agenda and its potential impact on Nigeria’s food security landscape

Oyo State is sowing the seeds of prosperity as Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration accelerates its ambitious economic diversification drive, with a bold focus on agribusiness. A slew of innovative initiatives is empowering farmers, attracting investors, and revolutionising the sector. As the state builds momentum towards food security and economic growth, Makinde’s vision for a thriving agribusiness sector is unfolding with remarkable success.

The state has established agribusiness hubs, such as the Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub and the Ijaiye Agribusiness Industrial Hub, which provide a platform for farmers, investors, and industries to interact and invest in the state’s agricultural sector. The Fasola hub, which spans 1,200 hectares, has attracted several medium to large-scale agribusinesses, including Oyo Sugarcane Processors Limited, which produces 30 tonnes of brown sugar daily.

The state government has also been providing support to farmers through various programs, including the distribution of quality seeds and seedlings to 10,000 smallholder farmers, as well as the provision of ₦1 billion in loans to farmers through the Agricultural Credit Corporation of Oyo State. Additionally, the government has trained over 3,000 farmers in modern agricultural practices, and 5,020 youths have been trained in agribusiness.

These initiatives have attracted significant investment to the state, with the Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub expected to create over 1,500 direct and indirect jobs and support 7,000 smallholder farmers. The Ijaiye Agribusiness Industrial Hub is expected to host over 40 agricultural industries, create over 100,000 jobs, and support the livelihoods of more than 500,000 farmers.

The Oyo State Government has also been engaging in partnerships and collaborations with international organisations, such as the African Development Bank, to support the development of the state’s agricultural sector. The state has also partnered with COVEC, a subsidiary of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, to accelerate agribusiness growth and strengthen the state’s economic base.

Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration is transforming Oyo State’s agricultural sector through various initiatives focused on economic diversification and food self-sufficiency. The establishment of Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZs) is revolutionising the sector by adding value to raw farm produce, reducing post-harvest losses, and boosting food security. The Ijaye Agro-Industrial Hub is expected to create over 100,000 jobs and support 500,000 smallholder farmers.

The state government, under the leadership of Governor Makinde, has distributed essential inputs to farmers, including seeds, fertilisers, farm equipment, and livestock support. Over 6,103 farmers have benefited from a 50% tractorization subsidy program, and rural roads have been constructed to improve farm-to-market access.

The administration has trained 1,950 farmers in climate-smart agriculture, pasture establishment, and beekeeping. Makinde’s administration has disbursed ₦1 billion in loans to farmers through the Agricultural Credit Corporation of Oyo State (ACCOS), enabling them to expand production and improve livelihoods.

The Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA) has been established to promote agribusiness and attract investors. Makinde has engaged with international partners, including the African Development Bank and the World Bank, to attract investments and support for Oyo State’s agricultural sector.

Governor Makinde’s administration has emphasised the importance of agriculture in driving economic growth and food security in the state. The state’s agricultural development agency, OYSADA, is working to ensure that smallholder farmers have access to the resources they need to increase their productivity. With the establishment of agribusiness hubs and support for farmers, Oyo State is poised to become a major player in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
