The Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has welcomed the ruling of the Oyo State High Court, which cleared the party to proceed with its much-anticipated national convention slated for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan.

Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice A. L. Akintola directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to monitor the exercise and ordered the National Convention Organising Committee, chaired by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, to continue its preparations unhindered.

Reacting to the decision, the Oyo State PDP Chairman, Hon. Dayo Ogungbenro, described the verdict as a victory for democracy and a moment of relief for members nationwide.

Speaking at the party’s State Secretariat in Molete, Ibadan, on Tuesday, he said the ruling had restored optimism and unity within the PDP fold.

“As the state chairman of this great party, there’s no way I wouldn’t be pleased with this judgment. We were in a State Working Committee meeting when His Excellency called to share the news. Everyone was excited. By God’s grace, the convention will hold as planned.”

He acknowledged that internal disagreements are part of politics but stressed that the PDP has its own mechanisms for reconciliation and conflict resolution.

“Politics is about interests, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. There will always be disagreements, but after the convention, we’ll put every issue on the table and resolve them,” he assured.

Ogungbenro also reaffirmed the PDP’s place as the country’s main opposition party, adding that the current mood of the nation shows Nigerians are ready to return the party to power.

“Let’s face it, PDP remains the only truly national and viable opposition today. When people compare the PDP years with what followed, the difference speaks for itself. By 2027, Nigerians will choose wisely again,” he said.

The party’s Publicity Secretary in Oyo State, Mr. Michael Ogunshina, also welcomed the court’s pronouncement, describing it as a boost to members’ confidence and morale.

“We’re very pleased with the judgment,” he said. “Preparations for the convention have been on for months, and when news came last week that it had been halted by a court order, it was a major concern. Today’s ruling is a huge relief and has set everything back on track.”

Ogunshina explained that the decision came in response to an ex parte motion filed by one of the aspirants in the forthcoming convention and that the substantive hearing had been fixed for November 10.

He added that the ruling allows the party to continue its activities while respecting due process.

“Even within a political family like ours, there will always be different views. What’s important is that we continue to engage and harmonise those interests so that the PDP emerges stronger,” he said.

On the broader political outlook, Ogunshina expressed the optimism of his state chairman, insisting that Nigerians are disenchanted with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and will rally behind the PDP in 2027.

“Governor Seyi Makinde has said it many times, the next general election won’t just be PDP versus APC, it’ll be Nigerians versus the APC,” Ogunshina noted.

“People are tired. Once we put our house in order, the road to victory will be clear.”

With the court’s green light and preparations already underway, the Oyo PDP reiterated its readiness to host thousands of delegates, leaders, and stakeholders from across the country in Ibadan for what it described as a “historic and unifying” national convention.National Convention will hold as planned – Oyo PDP chair, Ogungbenro reacts to Court ruling
