Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has announced that the state will soon introduce an air wing to strengthen its security architecture through aerial surveillance.

The Governor disclosed this upon his return from a working visit to China, where he concluded discussions with manufacturers of surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft.

Makinde stated that Oyo State has remained relatively peaceful and stable over the years due to deliberate and sustained investments in security. He noted that despite being the largest state in the southern part of Nigeria, Oyo continues to enjoy tranquility because of proactive governance and collaborative efforts between security agencies and community leaders.

“When we launched the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun, in Oyo State, our goal was to strengthen community policing and ensure our people could sleep with both eyes closed. Since then, we have continuously recruited, trained, and equipped Amotekun personnel as part of our core security strategy,” Makinde said.

He revealed that the forthcoming air wing will provide surveillance across the state, particularly in forests, mining sites, and border areas, helping to detect and prevent criminal activities before they escalate.

According to the Governor, his recent visit to China was aimed at securing technology and expertise to boost the state’s security operations. During the visit, he met with officials of CETC Wuhu Diamond Aircraft Manufacturing Company Limited, toured their facilities, and inspected aircraft that are expected to arrive in Oyo State by mid-November.

“We agreed on maintenance support and pilot training as part of our long-term security capacity plan,” he added.

Makinde emphasized that the initiative represents a new phase in Oyo State’s security management, combining aerial surveillance, intelligence gathering, and community policing to create an integrated security system.

He also reaffirmed his administration’s continued support for federal security agencies operating within the state through the provision of vehicles, communication equipment, and welfare packages to enhance their efficiency.

“The peace we enjoy today is a collective achievement, one we must continue to safeguard through foresight, collaboration, and technology,” Makinde said.

The Governor encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and to report any security concerns through the state’s toll-free line, 615, assuring residents that his administration remains committed to building a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Oyo State.
