The House of Representatives, on Thursday, passed for the second reading a bill proposing the creation of a Ibadan State in Nigeria’s south-west geopolitical zone.

The Bill, which was sponsored by the lawmaker representing Ibadan North East/South East federal constituency of Oyo State, aims to amend the 1999 Constitution to carve out Ibadan State from Oyo State.

The motion scaled second reading during plenary session.

While leading the debate, the two term lawmaker, who is also the Chairman, House Committee on Narcotic Drugs, argued that while Enugu and Kaduna, former capitals of the old Western Region, have since become states, Ibadan has not.

He described the bill as a “monumental step towards equitable development through federalism and realisation of the long-held aspiration of the people of Ibadan.”

Speaking further, Agboworin added that Ibadan has the population and landmass to become a state, noting that “one local government in Ibadan is bigger than three local governments in Bayelsa State.”

The bill is part of a growing number of proposals aimed at creating new states in Nigeria.

The Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the plenary, subsequently referred the bill to the Committee on Constitutional Review for further scrutiny.

Recall last month that the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, had appealed to President Bola Tinubu during his coronation for the creation of Ibadan State before 2027.
