Nigeria has had rulers since the return of the people’s government in 1999. Nigeria’s political history since the return of democracy has been marked by significant milestones and challenges. Who are these rulers and what have they achieved for the country?

Presidents of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic: Olusegun Obasanjo (1999-2007) tried to restore democracy and initiated economic reforms, implemented the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS) to reduce poverty and stimulate economic growth, played a key role in regional and international diplomacy, serving as Chair of the African Union and the Commonwealth yet his administration could not stamp out the challenges of corruption and insecurity.

Umaru Yar’Adua (2007-2010) was emphatic by focusing on infrastructure development and improving the nation’s energy sector. He introduced the Seven Point Agenda to boost economic growth, food security, and human development but died in office in 2010.

Goodluck Jonathan (2010-2015), implemented policies to improve power supply, transportation, and agriculture. He introduced the Transformation Agenda to consolidate democratic gains and stimulate economic growth but lost the 2015 presidential election to Muhammadu Buhari. Hence, his era witnessed high rate of corruption, insecurity(Boko Haram and banditry).

Muhammadu Buhari (2015-2023), launched an anti-corruption campaign and introduced economic reforms. He implemented programmes to improve agriculture, infrastructure, and security. He introduced the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) to stimulate economic growth. His anti-corruption crusade ushered in the grade one corruption, economic disorderliness and insecurity.

Bola Tinubu (2023-present), he won the presidential election in February 2023 amid controversies and some political abracadabra and took office in May 2023. He
meant to focus on economic reforms, security, and infrastructure development yet to no avail.

“If economic health, social vitality, and the raw pulse of public opinion were the only indicators relied upon to prognosticate the chances of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reelection in 2027, I would say with cocksure certitude that he is condemned to be a one-term president.

Not even the most hopelessly unthinking defenders of the Tinubu presidency can deny that his reign so far has been defined by unrelieved economic hardship, staggering inflation, a collapsing naira, and a deepening sense of despair among Nigerians. In other words, the objective conditions for his political repudiation are overripe_Farooq Kperogi”

The name Seyi Makinde! Does he deserve to become the President of Nigeria in 2027?

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 presidential election, one name that has been generating significant buzz is Governor Seyi Makinde. With his impressive track record as the Governor of Oyo State, Makinde has proven himself to be a leader with vision, competence, and a deep understanding of the needs of Nigerians.

Under Makinde’s leadership, Oyo State has witnessed significant improvements in various sectors, including infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and economic growth.
A 30% increase in infrastructure projects, with major road reconstructions improving connectivity and reducing travel times by 15%. The introduction of the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme, which has led to a 40% increase in healthcare access, covering over 300,000 residents. Improved primary school enrollment rates by 25%, and launched scholarship programmes benefiting over 5,000 students.

Makinde’s leadership style is characterised by transparency, accountability, and a commitment to delivering dividends of democracy to his people. His vision for Nigeria is ambitious and grounded in empirical reasoning, focusing on investing in agriculture and technology to create jobs and stimulate economic growth. Empowering young people through vocational training and skill acquisition programmes, with over 10,000 residents participating. Strengthening the Southwest region’s influence in Nigerian politics and economy.

With his impressive record as Governor, Makinde possesses the qualities necessary to lead Nigeria forward. Having governed a state with a large population, Makinde is well-equipped to address the challenges facing the country. Makinde’s achievements in Oyo State demonstrate his ability to deliver results and improve the lives of citizens. Makinde’s commitment to democracy, rule of law and accelerated roadmap for the developmental agenda stands his out to lead the most populous African country if given the opportunity and the necessary support.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria_Olawale Aremu, Ph.D. olawaleareoou@gmail.com
