Oyo 2027: Abass Oloko Warns ‘G22 Renewed’ Against Undermining Ibadan in Future Political Permutations

A prominent Mogaji from Ibadan, Abass Oloko has warned the leading political parties in Oyo State not to make the mistake of picking their candidates outside the state capital, Ibadan.

Oloko’s warning stemmed from the letter signed by a group known as G22 Renewed in which they argued that the next governor of Oyo State must come from zones outside Ibadan.

According to the political juggernaut and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he noted that Ibadan has vehemently rejected the call for zoning of the governorship seat ahead of the 2027 election adding that based on logic, science and data, whoever Ibadan supports will emerge as the next Governor of the Pacesetter State.

Oloko said the leaders of thought and political stakeholders from all the eleven local government areas of the city insisted that the governorship seat must be made open to all qualified Oyo State indigenes through direct, indirect primaries or consensus arrangement.

He commended Governor Seyi Makinde for spreading dividends of democracy to all zones across the state especially in the area of road network.

He further reminded Professor Wande Abimbola how he contested the 1992 governorship primary in SDP against late Kokapo Ishola and how he ended in the Senate.

Oloko stressed that competence and capacity should remain the major yardsticks for the 2027 governorship

Oloko’s position underscores growing tension over succession politics in the state as Oke Ogun, Oyo, Ogbomoso and Ibarapa zones have continued to press for a zoning arrangement in 2027.

His reactions to the G22 declaration signals that Ibadan which has the numerical strength intends to compete fully for the seat and resist any attempt to sideline its interests.

“There is no zoning arrangement anywhere. We reject it in its entirety.

“There are competent people in Ibadan and other zones who can govern Oyo state in 2027.”
