Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro has unveiled three prominent Southern politicians under consideration by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for its presidential candidate in the upcoming 2027 election.

This revelation occurred during an interview on AIT’s program, Focus Nigeria, where Moro named former President Goodluck Jonathan, ex-Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as potential contenders.
Moro emphasized that other qualified Southern PDP members might also enter the race. He stated, “Some names have been thrown up now that the position has been zoned to the South, and all the names have been members of the PDP.”

He further commented on Peter Obi’s previous departure from the PDP, noting, “Peter Obi, because of the perceived unfair treatment of not zoning the position of the president to the South and possibly to the Southeast, left PDP. Now that the position has been zoned to the South, he is welcome to join the race.”

Moro also highlighted the significance of Jonathan’s candidacy, describing him as a “bona fide and an imminent member of PDP, a statesman per se.” He added that Seyi Makinde has also been mentioned as a strong candidate.
Looking ahead, Moro stated that the party will continue its consultations and persuasions, insisting that the PDP has many qualified and eminent Nigerians from the South who can vie for the presidency. “At the end of the day, we will present a candidate that will give the ruling party a run for its money,” he asserted.
Reflecting on past challenges faced by the party, Moro noted, “Those who moved to the ADC, especially from the South, felt shortchanged by the 2022 zoning of the party, throwing the position open. This created some problems for the party, problems that PDP is trying to find a solution to.”
