The Oyo State Government has officially inaugurated the State Steering Committee for the implementation of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) project, a multi-million-dollar initiative aimed at boosting food and nutritional security while transforming agriculture into a competitive, industrialized sector.
SAPZ is an industrial agriculture flagship programme in Nigeria aim to reduce the nation’s dependence on imported agricultural products by promoting local agro-processing and value addition.
Oyo State is among the seven pioneer locations selected for Phase One of the initiative, alongside Kaduna, Kano, Ogun, Cross River, Imo, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The African Development Bank (AfDB) is funding the project while the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA) is serving as the implementing agency in Oyo state .
Speaking at the inauguration, held in Ibadan, Dr. Debo Akande, who represented Governor Seyi Makinde, Chairman of the Oyo-SAPZ Steering Committee, said the programme will promote agro-processing, sustainable farming, and strong linkages between farmers and agro-allied industries.
“This project has the capacity to radically transform the economy and improve the livelihoods of countless residents across Oyo State,” Dr. Akande stated, commending Governor Makinde’s leadership and commitment in securing Oyo’s inclusion among the beneficiaries of the SAPZ initiative.
The AfDB’s support, according to Dr. Akande, will help position Oyo State as a hub for agro-industrial activity, creating jobs, improving food systems, and enhancing competitiveness in both local and international markets.
Members of the Oyo-SAPZ Steering Committee include commisoners and head of agency from selected Ministries and agencies.
The SAPZ programme is expected to drive inclusive economic growth, improve rural livelihoods, and strengthen Oyo State’s position as a major player in Nigeria’s agricultural value chain.
