Nigeria’s persistent struggle with unreliable electricity supply continues to have profound adverse effects on its economy and the daily lives of its citizens. Under the leadership of Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu.

The inconsistent power supply imposes substantial economic burdens on Nigeria. The nation incurs approximately $26 billion in economic losses annually due to electricity shortages.

Businesses spend an additional $22 billion yearly on off-grid fuel sources to mitigate the impact of unreliable electricity, escalating operational costs. Frequent power outages are a result of putting a round peg in a square hole.

Somebody who has no prerequisite knowledge about the power sector chairs the ministry as a minister of power; what should Nigeria expect? This leads to production downtimes, compromised quality of perishable goods, disrupted water supplies, and impaired telecommunications infrastructure, all contributing to reduced sales and income.

“From what I’ve seen, Adelabu bears significant responsibility for the power sector’s current state. Rather than finding solutions, he seems to be making excuses. It’s disappointing to see a lack of progress and instead, a reliance on justification.”

The most disturbing report is that Adelabu’s obsession with the Oyo State governorship is severely hindering his ability to focus on his current responsibilities, sacrificing immense potential for a distant and uncertain goal.

Beyond economic ramifications, the erratic power supply affects the populace’s quality of life. The University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan recently experienced a significant power outage lasting over 100 days, beginning in October 2024.

Healthcare facilities struggle to maintain operations during outages, jeopardizing patient care. Many surgical procedures were postponed or canceled due to a lack of electricity to power operating rooms and essential medical equipment.

Intensive Care Units (ICUs), dialysis machines, ventilators, and incubators for newborns were affected, putting critical patients at serious risk.

The lack of power for essential medical equipment contributed to avoidable deaths, especially among emergency and critical care patients.

Since Minister of Power Adelabu took office, the power sector has yet to experience a significant turnaround. In fact, the national grid has continued to collapse repeatedly, with at least 11 reported incidents by November 2024.

This instability has exacerbated the already erratic electricity supply, leaving many areas without reliable power. The situation has become so dire that in some places, people have virtually stopped using electric bulbs due to the exorbitant costs and frequent outages.

Frequent power outages have caused medical devices to malfunction, leading to expensive repairs or replacements. Also, refrigeration systems for blood banks and medications, including vaccines and insulin, were compromised, reducing their effectiveness and leading to possible wastage.

Additionally, the reliance on generators exposes individuals to harmful emissions, increasing respiratory health risks.

Students and educators are not left out, they face difficulties due to inadequate lighting and ventilation in schools, impeding effective learning and teaching.

In 2024, the national grid experienced its 12th collapse on December 16, plunging numerous cities into darkness.

The trend persisted into 2025, with the first collapse occurring on February 12, affecting millions nationwide.

More recently, on March 7, another disturbance caused power generation to plummet below 1,000 MW, leading to extensive outages.

The persistent challenges in Nigeria’s power sector continue to hinder economic growth and affect the well-being of Nigerians.
