Ad-hoc staff across the 33 Local Government Areas of Oyo State staged a peaceful protest on Monday, urging Governor Seyi Makinde to increase the number of temporary workers being converted to permanent staff.

The protest follows the governor’s approval in October 2024 to transition 1,591 ad-hoc workers into permanent positions to address workforce shortages at the local government level.

The Oyo State Government scheduled the distribution of appointment letters from February 3 to February 6, 2025.

While commending the governor for his decision, the protesting workers emphasized the need to expand the conversion process.

Representatives of the qualified candidates described Makinde as a compassionate leader who has recognized the contributions of ad-hoc staff but stressed that more workers should be included in the scheme.

One of the representatives stated, “We appreciate the governor’s effort in absorbing 1,591 of us, but the reality is that over 6,000 ad-hoc staff serve in Oyo State. If only 1,500 are converted, more than 4,500 will be left stranded, hopeless, and shattered.”

The workers appealed to Governor Makinde for further intervention, emphasizing that their years of dedicated service should not go to waste.

They called on the state government to consider increasing the number of beneficiaries to accommodate more qualified ad-hoc staff.
