Social Justice for Societal Change. By
~ Dr Adewale Kolapo Kareem (AKK).

AKK is a governorship Aspirant in Oyo State in 2027.

As humans, we are wired with an inherent capacity for good and evil, and this is a paradox that has puzzled philosophers and scholars for centuries. Despite our differences in culture, language, and geography, we share a common humanity that is both fragile and resilient. However, it is our tendency to succumb to our baser instincts that necessitates the existence of laws and institutions to check our excesses and promote social order.

The role of institutions in shaping our behaviour and promoting social cohesion cannot be overstated. When institutions follow due process and are committed to upholding the rule of law, they inspire trust and confidence in citizens, and encourage them to align with the rules and norms that govern society. However, when institutions are weak or compromised, they can perpetuate corruption, inequality, and social injustice, all which undermine the very basics of society.

In Nigeria and even Oyo state, we are all too familiar with the challenges posed by corruption, inequality, and social injustice. Despite our vast human and natural resources, we continue to grapple with poverty, unemployment, insecurity and other obvious challenges.

The politicisation of corruption and the lack of accountability have created a culture of impunity, where those who loot our resources and betray the public trust are celebrated and usually protected by the machineries of the state.

The question is, can we do anything at all to change this narrative? I think and believe we can. How can we create a society that rewards integrity, hard work, and creativity, rather than corruption and mediocrity? The answer lies in our collective ability and determination to rise up and demand accountability from our leaders and institutions. We must refuse to tolerate corruption and impunity, and instead, promote a culture of transparency, accountability, and social justice.

I believe we all have uniform aspirations, thus, we have a responsibility to ourselves, our children, and future generations to build a better society and institution that check all these imbalances.

We must recognise that our individual and collective actions have consequences, and that we have the power to decide the kind of destiny that awaits us and the generations to come.

If we support a society that rates integrity, accountability, and social justice above any impunity, we are building a Nigeria that is just, equitable, and prosperous for all.

No doubt, the paradox of human nature is a reflection of our complex and multifaceted existence. While we are capable of great evil, it is not up for contest that we are also capable of greater good. Good people of Oyo state, we have a choice to make: we can continue down the path of corruption, inequality, and social injustice, or we can rise up and demand a better future for ourselves and our children. The choice is ours, and the time to act is now.
