Recall that bill scaled through the second reading on the floor of the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The African Action Congress (AAC) in Oyo State has strongly condemned a bill proposing the creation of New Oyo State with Oyo town as the Capital City from Oyo State.

Recall that bill scaled through the second reading on the floor of the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The private member bill was sponsored by Adeniyi Adeyemi and six others who observed the effect of Consequential change of the name of the remaining parts of Oyo State to Ibadan State with Ibadan City as Capital City and defined for Local Government Areas comprising the two States.

However, the bill has been described as “frivolous” and “questionable” in a press statement issued on Thursday by Kayode Babayomi, AAC State Chairman, Oyo State.

He said the bill was an attempt by the Alaafin Royal Family to impose their interests on the people of Oyo. “Oyo does not belong to the Adeyemi Family, and any attempt to impose their wants and desires on the people would be widely resisted,” Babayomi stated.

His statement reads: “The attention of the African Action Congress (AAC), Oyo State chapter, has been drawn to a frivolous bill that just passed the second reading in the Green Chamber yesterday. The bill, sponsored by one of the sons of the late Alaafin, Hon. Akeem Adeyemi, representing Afijio/Oyo/Atiba federal constituency of Oyo State, along with six others, is highly questionable.

“We, in the African Action Congress and the good people of Oyo State, view this bill as an arrangement by certain individuals from the Alaafin Royal Family. We want to categorically state that Oyo does not belong to the Adeyemi Family, and any attempt to impose their “wants” and “desires” on the people of Oyo will be widely resisted.

“This bill reinforces our long-held position that our country does not need a bicameral legislature, and legislation should be on a part-time basis. Were this the case, our lawmakers would not have the time to entertain such a useless bill at a time when the country is grappling with widespread economic woes and ruin. Our lawmakers should prioritize bills that immediately affect the material conditions of the citizens and foster national development.

“The creation of more states would mean more senators, more House of Representatives members, more governors and executives, and an endless stream of appointments, at a time when the majority of Nigerians are calling for the abolishment of one arm of the parliament to reduce the excessive cost of governance. This was made evident during the last nationwide protest tagged #EndBadGovernance. The introduction of this bill demonstrates just how insensitive, unreasonable, and greedy our representatives are.

“We want to make it clear that we do not need more states, but better representatives and good governance. Even if 33 more states were created within Oyo State under this same leadership and governance pattern, marked by misappropriation, wickedness, impunity, cluelessness, and greed, no positive outcome would emerge until we prioritize what truly matters.

“Oyo State needs visionary leaders and representatives from a political party like the African Action Congress to steer the state toward development and progress.”
