Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has strongly condemned the manner in which President Bola Tinubu’s administration removed the fuel subsidy, warning of the severe hardship it will cause for ordinary Nigerians. In an interview with the Financial Times, Obasanjo stressed that the government should have prioritized mitigating the hardship caused by the subsidy removal, rather than hastily implementing the policy.

Obasanjo also expressed concern over the growing restiveness among Nigerian youths, triggered by widespread unemployment, and warned that the country is “sitting on a keg of gunpowder.” Additionally, he alleged that sinister forces are working against the progress of the Dangote Refinery, claiming that powerful cabals in the oil and gas sector are determined to frustrate the project.

The former President’s comments come as Nigerians continue to feel the pinch of the fuel subsidy removal, with many calling for a more gradual and thoughtful approach to economic reform.
