Just a few days ago, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) officially announced Ibadan, Oyo State, as the host city for its 2025 Elective National Convention. This isn’t just a political event, it is a strategic win for the people of Oyo State and indeed the entire South West.

This historic convention is set to attract Nigeria’s most prominent political leaders, former presidents, governors, ministers, party stalwarts, and delegates from across the 36 states and the FCT. The implications are far-reaching, particularly for our economy, our visibility, and our people.

Having participated in previous national conventions including serving as a member of the Electoral Committee during the 2021 convention in Abuja, I can confidently say the financial and social impact of this gathering is immense. From transportation and hotel bookings to street vendors, fashion designers, caterers, creatives, and tourism operators, this is a golden opportunity to showcase what you do, sell, offer, and connect with a diverse, national audience.

We must recognize the wisdom and foresight of Governor Seyi Makinde, who played a critical role in securing this hosting right for Oyo State. His leadership has continuously raised the bar—from the strengthening of our security architecture to the massive infrastructural upgrades, digital economy initiatives, and world-class projects in education, healthcare, and road networks. Oyo state is now not only safe and accessible but attractive to both investors and visitors alike.

This convention will not only spotlight Oyo State but also have a spillover effect on other southwestern states. Just like in Abuja where nearby states like Nasarawa and Niger experienced a hospitality boom during past conventions, neighboring states like Osun, Ogun, Ekiti, and Ondo will benefit from this surge in political tourism and economic activity.

Oyo is ready. The hospitality sector is primed. Our markets are open. Our security architecture is firm. And our people—enterprising and welcoming as ever are prepared to host Nigeria.

Let us seize this moment. Let entrepreneurs, artisans, creatives, and professionals across sectors begin to plan, position, and package themselves for what promises to be the mother of all conventions.

Above all, let us commend Governor Seyi Makinde, a true statesman whose dedication to the growth of Oyo State continues to deliver lasting dividends for the people.

Oyo State is open for business. Let’s make history together.
